Porsche Taycan

Porsche Confirms Specs for the Taycan Electric Car

With the launch date set for 2019, Porsche’s first fully electric vehicle, the Taycan, got detailed a bit more by the Germans on Monday, who also confirmed some of the technical details surrounding the car.

As per Porsche’s statement, the Taycan will be squeezing more than 600 horsepower from the electric motors. Electricity will be stored and distributed via an 800 V system.

The battery is to give the car a range of over 500 km (311 miles), while naught to 100 kph (62 mph) acceleration is confirmed to be of under 3.5 seconds.

The secret to the performance of the model is, according to Porsche, the use of two permanently synchronous motors (PSM) like the ones deployed on the 919 Hybrid race car. They generate a permanent rotary motion that can be applied at any time without needing to be started.

One of the motors is fitted to the rear axle of the car, while the other spins the front wheels and together allow for a more compact design.

“We opted for a permanently excited synchronous motor in the Taycan,” said in a statement Heiko Mayer, drive unit project leader.

“They combine a high energy density with strong sustained performance and maximum efficiency.”

The batteries that will make it into the Taycan will be capable of fast charging. While being compatible with 400-volt technology chargers, the battery can take its juice from 800-volt systems, meaning a range of four hundred kilometers (248 miles) can be achieved in just fifteen minutes of charging.

Porsche estimates it will be manufacturing 20,000 Taycan models per year, roughly two-thirds of the current sales figures for the 911.

The electrification efforts made by Porsche are meant to allow the company to switch to electromobility before all other German auto manufacturers.

By 2025 Porsche plans for every second car sold to have an electric drive unit, with half of the models purely electric and the other half plug-in hybrids.

Porsche Plans To Cut Costs To Account For Lower Profitability Of EVs

Porsche looks for an additional €6 billions in savings

According to Bloomberg, Porsche is working on a plan to improve overall efficiency of the company to compensate for the lower profitability of new electric models.

The idea is to improve operating profit by €6 billion (about $6.8 billion) over eight years by 2025, which is about €750 million annually on average. Savings are expected in:

  • streamlining operations
  • increasing efficiencies
  • cutting costs
  • boost contribution from new business such as digital offerings

High profitability of Porsche is very important not only for the brand in its transitional period from ICE to EVs, but in general for Volkswagen Group (Porsche is the most profitable brand in the group), especially since Volkswagen recently struggles with falling sales.

According to the article, the all-electric Porsche Taycan will cost from €6,000 to €10,000 euro more to produce than a comparable conventional model, but the German manufacturer will not increase the price because of that, which means that the margin will be lower.

After 2025 Porsche hopes to increase efficiency and savings to €2 billion annually when half of car sales will be electrified. For comparison, Porsche noted €23.5 billion of revenues in 2017 and operating profit of €4.1 billion at operating margin of 17%.

Ferrari 250 gt coupé Pinin Farina serie 2

 Sold

Bonhams to Auction a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT ‘Series II’ Coupé

1960 FERRARI 250 GT ‘SERIES II’ COUPÉ Coachwork by Pininfarina

A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT ‘Series II’ Coupe will be auctioned by Bonhams on October 27 at the Padua Auction.

In the early 1960’s road car production had ceased to be a sideline for Ferrari and was seen as vitally important to the company’s future stability. Hence, the 250, Ferrari’s first volume-produced model ,was seen as critically important, though production of the first of the line — the 250 Europa, built from 1953 to 54 — amounted to fewer than 20. Prior to the advent of the Europa, Ferrari had built road-going coupes and convertibles in small numbers, usually to special customer order using a sports-racing chassis as the basis.

« Ghia and Vignale of Turin and Touring of Milan were responsible for bodying many of these but there was no attempt at standardization for series production and no two cars were alike,” writes Bonhams. « The introduction of the 250 Europa heralded a significant change in Ferrari’s preferred coachbuilder; whereas previously Vignale had been the most popular carrozzeria among Maranello’s customers, from now on Pinin Farina (later ‘Pininfarina’) would be Ferrari’s number one choice, bodying no fewer than 48 out of the 53 Europa/Europa GTs built. Pinin Farina’s experiments eventually crystallized in a new Ferrari 250 GT road car that was first displayed publicly at the Geneva Salon in March 1956. However, the Torinese carrozzeria was not yet in a position to cope with the increased workload, resulting in production being entrusted to Carrozzeria Boano after Pinin Farina had completed a handful of prototypes. »

With the arrival of Pininfarina’s ‘notchback’ Coupe on the 250 GT chassis, the true series production began. Some 353 of which were built between 1958 and 1960 within the sequence ‘0841’ to ‘2081′ and were relatively small scale of production meant that cars could still be ordered with subtle variations according to customer choice, as well as enabling a handful of show cars and ‘specials’ to be constructed on the 250 GT chassis.

« Still white with red interior, the latter having been re-trimmed by Luppi around 15 years ago, the Ferrari presents very well; the coachwork is nice, the interior is in very good condition, and the engine works well. Sold with a copy of its cancelled Italian registration document, ‘2003’ represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire an example of this landmark, yet undervalued, Ferrari GT that helped cement Maranello’s continuing relationship with Carrozzeria Pininfarina,” adds Bonhams.
